When you decide to take a short break from cruising and maybe do some shopping, make sure to visit the colorful market that takes place each Sunday in the bustling town of Santa Maria del Cami. Regarded as one of the best markets of Mallorca, the Santa Maria Market is a place to enjoy slow shopping and learn about the cultural heritage of the island.
Open from 7 am until 2 pm, the market offers everything you can think of. Shop for fresh vegetables and fruits to prepare when you return to your yacht or find souvenirs to take home after the vacation is over. You’ll find a spectacular selection of Mallorcan delicacies like ensaimadas, sobrasada pork sausages, sangria, and Mahon cheese.
Attracting both locals and visitors every week, the market is traditionally held in the plaza just by “blue roof tile” church - one of the most stunning baroque cathedrals in Spain.
If you’re hunting for souvenirs, you can choose between numerous handmade crafts, lovely jewelry, and of course, the emblematic textile of the region “telas de lenguas”. The vibrant town of Santa Maria del Cami homes one of the last three factories where these ornate fabrics are made. You can also find dresses, pillows, and garments made by talented artisans using this classic Mallorcan material with intricate design.
To keep little ones busy during your shopping spree, you’ll find a playground in the center of the market, although kids often enjoy looking around the shops. Sometimes you’ll even find some handmade toys for boys and girls.
The vibrant atmosphere is further accentuated with live music played by street musicians - walking around this market is an experience for all senses.
You can have some great street food too, although there are fantastic restaurants and cafes around the market where you can rest after walking around the markets looking for a perfect souvenir. Try the black suckling pig in one of the authentic eateries nearby and pair it with some nice red - you’ll have many to choose from as the region is famous for its quality wines and vineyards.
